캐나다의 Navigate Design 스튜디오는 설립한 지 불과 2년밖에 되지 않았지만 무서운 속도로 성장 하며, 세계 유수의 프로젝트를 진행해 다수의 수상 경력을 보유하고 있다. 스튜디오의 공동설립자 이자 150개 이상의 대형 프로젝트를 담당한 Ken Lam과 인테리어 디자인, 그래픽 디자인, 소품 디자인, 프로젝트 매니지먼트, 조명, 음악 코디네이션, 스타일링 등 여러 분야의 뛰어난 인재들이 Navigate Design에 모였고, 세계에서 가장 높은 호텔인 두바이 JW 메리어트 호텔 71층과 72층에 레스토랑 Morah를 설계했다. 

 

엘리베이터를 타고 호텔 72층에 내리면 복숭아색의 아름다운 Morah에 도달한다. 세계 최고층 호텔의 아찔한 높이에서 270°가량의 뷰를 막힘 없이 구경할 수 있는 이 레스토랑은 여러 요소에서 그 여성스럽고 섬세한 매력을 숨김없이 드러내고 있다. 건물의 구조가 독특해서 실내 공간의 모서리들은 마치 별 모양처럼 뾰족하고 강인한 이미지의 예각 형태로 되어 있는데 이런 형태와 균형을 잡기 위해 대부분 구조물과 장식은 최대한 곡선과 원형으로 처리하고, 전체적으로 부드러운 파스텔 톤의 컬러를 활용했다. 이것은 정방형이 아니어서 개성이 강한 건물의 내부공간을 어떻게 하면 균형 잡히게 꾸밀 수 있는지에 대해 디자이너 Ken Lam과 Navigate Design이 고민 끝에 다다른 해답이라고 할 수 있다. 원형의 계단 난간을 따라 둥근 형태로 배치된 좌석은 굳이 창가 자리를 고집할 이유가 없을 정도로 아름답고, 천장의 구조는 꽃잎을 형상화해서 입체적이고도 여성스러운 디자인으로 꾸몄다.

 

약 10m 길이의 곡선형 바(Bar)는 수제로 조각한 목재로 전면을 장식했고 새틴 래커로 마감했다. 위에는 황동 선반이 디캔터와 유리잔을 진열하고 있으며, 이곳에 앉은 고객들도 바 뒤편에 앤틱한 거울을 통해 뷰를 볼 수 있도록 배려했다. 이 바는 10인 정도가 앉을 수 있다.

 

 

72층에서 폭포처럼 쏟아져 내리는 샹들리에는 71층의 중앙 테이블로 향한다. 흔히 곡선과 원형을 이용해서 실내를 꾸민 공간은 공간의 활용에 있어서 비효율적인 부분이 있을 수 있지만, Navigate Design은 Morah를 통해 틀에 얽매이지 않는 공간 활용을 제시했다. 두 층 어디에서 봐도 시선을 사로잡는 샹들리에와 나선형으로 떨어지는 아름다운 계단이 만난다면 계단 바로 옆 공간도 VI P 테이블이 될 수 있다. 이곳은 정찬 중 타인의 부러움 섞인 시선을 즐길 줄 아는 고객들이 주로 찾는 자리가 되어 71층의 중앙을 장식한다. 

 

 

Morah 레스토랑 내 모서리나 뾰족하게 돌출된 부분은 좀 더 독립된 공간에서의 식사를 원하는 고객들을 위해 자리를 배치했다. 고객들은 이곳에서 창가를 정면으로 바라보거나 등지고 앉아, 두바이의 야경을 곁들인 지중해식 만찬을 즐길 수 있다. 캐나다 토론토와 미국의 마이애미에서 레스토랑 Byblos로 많은 사랑을 받은 클라이언트는 Navigate Design이라는 선택을 통해 또 한 번 식도락가들이 주목할 만 한 레스토랑을 탄생시켰다. Morah의 성공적인 런칭으로 더욱 유명해진 Navigate Design 스튜디오는 Navigate(길을 찾다, 항해하다)라는 이름에 걸맞게 클라이언트의 비전을 최종 목적지로 인도하는 길잡이가 되고 있다.

 

 

Navigate Design created Morah, a 149-seat restaurant located on the 71st and 72nd floors of the world’s tallest hotel, the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai. While the crew set out to monopolize the 270-degree unblocked view of Dubai skyline, they faced some challenges working with the unique architecture, which resembles a Sheriff star with hard converging angles at all corners. To balance such overpowering architecture, the team had to soften the space to work with Morah’s feminine brand. Guests arrive at the 72nd floor via a private elevator into an intimate peach-hue reception filled with lush greens, candle-lit lanterns. Further in, the dining room dramatically opens up into an airy space with spectacular views. A sculptural spiral staircase ties the duo-floor restaurant together as it unwinds around a cascading chandelier down to the 71st floor.

 

 

The concentric design is also reflected in the ceiling, where wooden flower petals are staggered inside a circular light cove. Soft seating of pastel leather and crush velvets in hues of peach, salmon, mint-green and turquoise were used throughout the space, with prominent curve detailing to soften the otherwise rigid architecture. The lower dining area carries a similar feminine palette. A centre booth that seats six anchors itself at the bottom of the stair and becomes the focal point as you traverse down the spiral staircase. This is the ultimate “be seen” VIP experience for guests who wish to embrace all aspiring gazes as they dine. Additionally, an extravagant mezze Bar anchors one side of the dining room and a large mermaid mirror wall defines the other. Art and graphics play a significant role in all of Navigate Designs’ creations.

 

 

Starting from the entry resin painting, next is the mermaid mirror wall which is the marriage of digitally printed mermaid tails on mirror, and hand applied gold leafing by the design crew on site. There are also 39 frames of stunning jelly fish photography in the two restroom corridors, again with hand painted gold accent and leafing on every single piece before they were hung. The crew also designed four custom oval rugs, with repeating mermaid motif in coral color over peach undertone, they sit below dining groups in the middle corners, and help to define unique dining zones. Morah is not shy to confide her strong femininity, but all the details are subtle. Whether it is that perfect curve wood archway, the offset stair balustrades, or that splash of gold underneath the resin coating, there is always more to discover, as it is with Morah’s ever intriguing food offerings.
